Resettlement Action Plan for Manzini Region Water Supply Sanitation Project
January 26, 2024Project Background
The Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini (GoKE) secured a loan from the World Bank for the implementation of the Eswatini Water Supply and Sanitation Access Project (EWSSAP). The overall project cost is US$40 million and was approved in 2019. The project will finance four major components. Component 1 will provide financing to increase potable water supply coverage in the Shiselweni region; Component 2 will finance rural domestic sanitation service delivery in the Tinkhundla; component 3 will provide project management support; and Component 4 will support potential disaster recovery needs by providing immediate response to an eligible crisis or emergency. Of these four components, it is expected that component 1 will require land take for advancing activities planned under package 1 and 2. This will require the preparation and implementation of a Resettlement Action Plan (RAP). The overall objective of the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) is to identify the adverse social and economic impacts associated with works under Package 1 and 2 activities. Based on potential impacts identified during assets inventory exercises, this RAP put in place adequate mitigation measures and actions to be taken by the GoKE including avoidance, minimization, or compensation measures to reduce, if possible, elimination of adverse impacts on project affected persons (PAPs).
